Autism Spectrum / ADHD & Neurodivergent Patterns
Neurodevelopmental patterns with a strong genetic and neurobiological basis, often amplified by gut, immune, methylation, mitochondrial, and environmental factors. Functional medicine does not 'cure' neurodivergence — it works to reduce the physiological load that worsens focus, sensory overwhelm, sleep, and regulation.
Think of a neurodivergent brain as running a different operating system, not a broken one. It processes signals with more depth and less filtering — which is a feature, not a bug. The 'symptoms' most people notice are what happens when that operating system runs on a body that's inflamed, under-fueled, or over-stimulated.
In plain English
Autism and ADHD are neurodevelopmental patterns rooted in genetics and early brain wiring. Functional medicine does not try to 'cure' them — that framing is wrong and, for many people, harmful. What it does try to do is reduce the physiological load that makes focus, sleep, sensory processing, and emotional regulation harder than they need to be.
Research consistently shows higher rates of gut dysbiosis, food sensitivities, methylation variants, mitochondrial dysfunction, and mineral imbalances (low zinc, iron, magnesium) in neurodivergent people. These are not the cause of neurodivergence — but treating them often improves quality of life significantly.
The most powerful intervention is usually the one talked about least: an environment, schedule, and community that fits the person's actual nervous system, instead of demanding they fit a neurotypical one.
Where you feel it
The step-by-step
- 1Genetic wiring
Neurodivergent brain development is set early and is largely genetic.
- 2Physiological load
Gut, immune, methylation, and mineral imbalances amplify sensory, attention, and regulation difficulties.
- 3Environmental mismatch
Rigid schedules, sensory overload, and social scripts that don't fit drain capacity daily.
- 4Burnout or masking collapse
Chronic mismatch shows up as exhaustion, anxiety, shutdown, or new physical symptoms in adulthood.
Symptoms, causes & labs
- Lifelong difficulty with attention, executive function, or task follow-through
- Sensory sensitivities (sound, light, textures, food)
- Social overwhelm, strong routines and interests, emotional regulation challenges
- Sleep, gut, and immune issues that commonly co-travel
- Genetic and neurodevelopmental factors
- Gut dysbiosis, food sensitivities, and gut–brain axis inflammation
- Methylation, mitochondrial, and mineral (zinc, magnesium, iron) imbalances
- Toxic burden and chronic infections that amplify neuroinflammation
- Comprehensive stool analysis, organic acids test
- Methylation SNPs, homocysteine, active B12, RBC folate
- Ferritin, zinc, copper, magnesium RBC
Common lifestyle changes that help
These are the foundational shifts most often used alongside clinical care for this pattern. Start with one; layer in the next only when the first feels automatic. Discuss anything major with your practitioner.
- Predictable routines, sensory-friendly environments, and honest accommodations
- Protein-rich breakfast to support focus and mood
- Address gut health, sleep, and iron/zinc/omega-3 status
- Movement daily — especially outdoor, unstructured movement
- Reduce ultra-processed food, artificial colors, and excessive screen time
- Community and identity-affirming support (neurodivergence is not a defect to fix)
Red flags — don't wait
- Severe self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or new catatonia — get urgent professional support
- Sudden regression in a child (loss of speech, skills, or connection)
- Feeding difficulties leading to nutrient deficiency or failure to thrive
Supportive habits to discuss
- Predictable routines, sensory-friendly environments, and honest accommodations (not shame)
- Protein-rich breakfast; address iron, zinc, magnesium, and omega-3 status
- Investigate and treat gut health — the gut-brain axis is heavily implicated
- Daily outdoor, unstructured movement; reduce ultra-processed food and excessive screens
- Identity-affirming community and, when useful, neurodivergent-informed therapy
