Think of your gut as a rainforest. Dysbiosis is what happens when the ecosystem loses diversity — a few loud species take over and the soil (your gut lining) starts to leak.

Your intestines are lined with a single layer of cells held tightly together, coated by a thin mucus layer teeming with trillions of microbes. In a healthy gut, this layer acts like a smart border: it lets nutrients in and keeps toxins, undigested food, and microbes out.

In dysbiosis, the microbial community becomes lopsided — fewer helpful species, more inflammatory ones. The mucus thins, the tight junctions between cells loosen, and molecules that should stay inside the tube start slipping into the bloodstream.
